Murmansk Regional Scientific Library

The Murmansk State Regional Universal Scientific Library is the largest cultural, educational, local history, information center of the Murmansk region.

The regional scientific library has created conditions for self-education and intellectual leisure. The northerners attend popular science lectures, literary and musical evenings, presentations of books and exhibitions, trainings and master classes, computer and financial literacy classes, take part in thematic events, quizzes and quests. Participation in large-scale all-Russian actions has become traditional: “Library Night”, “Night of Cinema”, “Night of Arts”, “Give Books with Love”. Twice the library became a platform for the “Great Ethnographic Dictation”.
The library actively develops international cooperation within the Barents Euro-Arctic Region, holds international, all-Russian, regional scientific and practical conferences, round tables, seminars, literary meetings with foreign writers.
The library’s universal fund has over 1.2 million publications in print, audiovisual and electronic forms. The library has the largest collection of literature in the region in all branches of knowledge, including its own and acquired databases, a collection of publications about the Murmansk region, including in the Sami language, as well as a unique collection of rare books, which contains editions of the 17th – early 20th centuries …
The Internet project of the Murmansk Regional Scientific Library “Electronic Library” Kola North “contains documents on the history of the Kola North, issues of social, economic, scientific and cultural life of the region. The electronic library includes 25 thematic collections and sections, more than 6500 books, audiovisual documents, photo documents, articles from magazines and collections.
The electronic library presents an interactive map “69 Wonders of the Kola North”. The 3D map of the Kola Peninsula shows 69 attractions of our region. These are cultural sites, extraordinary places and natural phenomena, significant events, amazing records and achievements, shrines of the Kola North.
On January 29, 2018, on the basis of the Murmansk Regional Scientific Library, the Regional Center of the Presidential Library was opened – the 34th regional center of the Presidential Library in Russia. The opening of the center took place within the framework of a cooperation agreement between the Government of the Murmansk region and the Presidential Library. The Arctic strategy of Russia has been identified as one of the priority areas of the Regional Center. The most important tasks of the center are the digitization of unique and especially valuable local history publications, joint work with regional museums and the state archive of the Murmansk region; providing access to information resources of the Presidential Library that have scientific and educational value; provision of information, bibliographic and service services based on modern computer technologies; carrying out activities of an educational and educational nature for students and pupils.
In 2018, the library opened the largest Foucault pendulum beyond the Arctic Circle – a joint project of the Murmansk Regional Scientific Library and the Museum of Entertaining Sciences “Focus”.
The library has a literary cafe “Botanik”. Here you can meet friends, have coffee, play board games, watch videos.
The activities of the Murmansk Regional Scientific Library have been repeatedly noted with high awards, including diplomas of the winners of the All-Russian competitions in the nominations: “Library of the Year”, “The Best Business Library of Russia”, “For High Achievements in the Field of Environmental Education”, “For High Results in the Field legal informatization “; diploma of the All-Russian competition “Promotion of books and reading by means of visual culture”. The library services have repeatedly become Laureates of the regional competition “The best goods and services of the Murmansk region”, Diploma and Laureates of the All-Russian competition of the program “100 best goods of Russia”.
The library was awarded the Badge of Honor “For active work in the patriotic education of citizens of the Russian Federation”, the Certificate of Honor of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Certificate of Honor from the Governor of the Murmansk Region and the Murmansk Regional Duma, the Diploma of the Russian Committee of the UNESCO Information for All Program for the great contribution to the promotion and development of the Program UNESCO “Information for All”, Public award in the field of culture “Warm North”.
