22 июля на широте Мурманска закончился полярный день, который начался 21 мая.
С 22 июля и до 11 августа можно наблюдать белые ночи, светлое время суток будет постепенно сокращаться.
Термин «белые ночи» применяется для качественной характеристики сумерек. Сумерки с такой характеристикой обычно наблюдаются в широтах выше 60 градусов. В широтах, расположенных выше Полярного круга, белые ночи длятся в течение двух-трех недель до начала полярного дня и столько же после. В широтах, расположенных ниже Полярного круга, время белых ночей сочетается со временем летнего солнцестояния, длится в течение двух-трех недель, доходя до максимального показателя в день солнцестояния.
Полярная ночь — период, когда Солнце более 24 часов (то есть более 1 суток) не появляется из-за горизонта. Самая короткая Полярная ночь (почти 2 суток) наблюдается на широте, равной около 67°23′; самая длинная на полюсах — чуть менее 6 месяцев. Полярная ночь является следствием наклона оси вращения Земли к плоскости эклиптики, которая составляет приблизительно 23,5°. Фактически Полярная ночь начинается на широтах больше 72°5′ широты. Полярная ночь всегда короче полярного дня, так как Солнце, даже находясь ниже горизонта, освещает атмосферу, и полной темноты нет. Если наблюдатель находится недалеко от полярного круга, весь день будет состоять из сумерек.
Полярная ночь на широте Мурманска длится со 2 декабря по 11 января. Мурманская область почти целиком лежит к северу от Полярного круга, поэтому на ее территории наблюдается Полярная ночь .
Во время полярной ночи можно наблюдать, редкое природное явление – северное сияние.
